Moving Beyond Phonics: Supporting Readers in Third Grade and Up

Now that the Science of Reading is frequently being adopted for early reading instruction across the country, educators are beginning to ask how they can use this important research beyond phonemic awareness and phonics instruction with students in the upper grades.

In this series, we’ll discuss how to support students who are entering into grade levels where reading is assessed on state standardized tests — often 3rd grade — and who are simultaneously shifting from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.”
