Join Savvas Learning Company for our Virtual STEM Fair celebrating National Earth Week! Explore STEM careers and activities highlighting our planet's wonders and innovative minds. Connect with passionate Earth science, sustainability, and conservation professionals. Whether you're a student, educator, or simply curious, there's something for everyone at this full day of virtual experiences. Mark your calendars for a day of education and fun!

HOW IT WORKS: Teachers register, then project the presentation or share the link with students. You will have access to all of the sessions for the entire day.

If you are unable to attend the live event, register anyway and we will send you the recorded STEM sessions.

Gee Whiz! How Big Are You Really?

Michael Comer

Michael Comer is an experienced teacher, science educator and STEM author who has led many workshops on a range of topics in science and mathematics. His goal is in helping educators to embrace new standards and infuse more hands-on, problem-based learning experiences into their classroom practices.
Session Description

How do you know how big (or small) something is just by looking at a picture of it? Let's examine images of earth science themes as we use observation skills and mathematical reasoning to develop concepts of scale, proportion and quantity.

walkSTEM Anywhere and Anytime!

Willa Barnett and Andrew Moorhead

Willa Barnett is a comedian, computer scientist, and trivia host from San Francisco, California. A recent graduate of Northwestern University, she now enjoys being exceptionally strange with her sketch and improv group Skip Skip and is a talkSTEM collaborator who creates math and STEM walks with the talkSTEM team.

Andrew Moorhead is a writer and performer based in New York City. Andrew’s specialties include social media content, narrative storytelling and writing dialogue, having recently completed his MFA in Dramatic Writing at NYU. Andrew is playwright, book-editor, former comedic board game writer, and is a talkSTEM collaborator who creates math and STEM walks with the talkSTEM team.
Session Description

Promote math, science, STEM and STEAM education to all children. talkSTEM’s mission, founded by Dr. Koshi Dhingra, is to make Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) learning engaging for all learners. talkSTEM’s approach centers on using place-based learning strategies so that students see the relevance of STEM in their local communities and environments. TalkSTEM takes educators and learners on "STEM walks" in different settings using videos. In addition, instructional guides can be downloaded for your students to make their own STEM walks! We foster student engagement by sharing free resources for all educators who shape learning in K-12 students—both in and out of school.

Using the Waves from Earthquakes to See Inside Our Planet

Michael Wysession

Michael Wysession has been a Geophysics Professor at Washington University in St. Louis for 33 years, doing research and teaching about earthquakes, volcanoes, and climate science. Michael is also an international leader in geoscience literacy and education, and was one of the lead authors of the U.S. Next Generation Science Standards.
Session Description

Professor Wysession, at Washington University in St. Louis, will show how he uses the seismic waves from large earthquakes to make pictures of the Earth’s deep interior, like a medical X-ray or CT-scan. He will talk about traveling to places like Minnesota and Madagascar to install seismometers and learn why some volcanoes erupt where they do and to piece together the ancient history of the tectonic motions of the continents.

Energy Resources and Electrification: Powering Our Earth—A Journey Through Earth Science

Scarlett Luis

Scarlett Luis, a certified project management professional and UPenn graduate, has over 10 years of experience improving products and processes in the Energy sector. As a Product Leader with a background in Electrical Engineering, she is passionate about empowering underrepresented groups through career coaching and advocating for first-generation college students.

The Neat Stuff Under Your Feet: How Rock Cores and Fossils Help Us Understand the Geologic Past

Jesse Wilcox

Jesse Wilcox, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in Biology and Science Education at the University of Northern Iowa. He was a former high school general science and biology teacher prior to becoming a professor. Jesse has won numerous teaching awards, has presented nearly 200 times at science and STEM education conferences, and has published 45 articles in science and STEM education journals. Jesse is passionate about working with science teachers and helping them strive toward improving their practice.
